Creation Story: Greek version part I

Image
Chaos was the beginning, the emptiness or nothingness from whence everything came. Now Chaos was a gloomy, soupy mist with all the matter in the cosmos just drifting around. Eventually a creator some named her Ananke, Goddess of Necessity, or God collected some of its matter and solidified into the earth, which developed a living personality. She called herself Gaea, the Earth Mother. After a period of time, the sky formed - a protective dome that was blue in the daytime and black at night, and named him Ouranos. Soon Chaos 'got a little creation-happy'. Water collected out of the mist of Chaos, pooled in the deepest parts of the earth and formed the first seas, which developed a consciousness - the god Pontus. Soon another dome came into being beneath the earth, but it was dark and murky, this was Tartarus, the Pit of Evil and Damnation. Then emerge the dark immortals: Nyx, Goddess of the Night and Erebus, God of Darkness and Mist. Erebus and Nyx wed and bore Hemera, Goddes...

Through the Endurance of Atlas

Image
I hope that everyone had a great Labor's Day Weekend. Its time to get back work and endure to the next week. Atlas Bearer of Heaven Titan God of Astronomy and Navigation Titan God of Daring Thought and Endurance Former General of Titans’ Army Atlas, Titan God of Endurance and Weightlifting, was known for his strength and might. Atlas had huge muscles and was very large. He was very powerful with both his mind and his strength. Atlas was also known for being very pride and headstrong which got him into a lot of trouble in the end. As Kronos' General and second-in-command, Atlas was chosen to lead the other Titans in battle. He initially had the upper hand in his battles with the gods, since he was a very skilled swordsman and a much more experienced warrior. Hence, Atlas was initially known as the "terror of the gods." However, the gods quickly became skilled warriors as well, and with the help of their new extremely powerful weapons (Zeus' ...

The Gift of Pandora

Image
Before the story begins, let me say that some people take umbrage at the title "Pandora's Box" and insist it should be "Pandora's Jar". They may have reason—based on what Hesiod wrote, but myths change with the re-telling and people are accustomed to "Pandora's Box," so I shall use the term, in this, my re-telling of the myth of Pandora and her box. The background to the story of Pandora's Box is the Titan Prometheus's passive-aggression towards the king of the gods, Zeus with the Dawn of Humanity. Having gotten away with or having paid the price for one misdeed, Prometheus kept going back for more. Zeus was very creative in the way he meted out punishments. Pandora was one example. The Gift of Pandora Prometheus was mankind's benefactor. Zeus, the young King of the Gods wasn't crazy about us and didn't want us to have, among other things, fire. Prometheus, then, to remedy the situation, and ascended into heaven,...

Wave of Oceanus

Image
The Monsters of the Deep series were to introduce you to the Titan Lord who keeps them under control (most of the time.) His name is Oceanus. Oceanus First Ruler of the Sea Titan Lord of the Oceans Father of the World Waters Oceanus is known as a Titan and also known as a Protogenoi. He is the Titan Lord of the Primeval Oceans. As a Titan and Protogenoi, he was the firstborn from Uranus and Gaia and made to live in Tartarus until freed by Kronos. While Tethys created the subterranean caverns to guide the water to earth, Oceanus provided the earth with rivers, springs and rain clouds from his ocean.  Oceanus is likewise the god who controlled the rising and setting of the heavenly bodies which are considered to emerge and descend into his watery world at the ends of the earth. Oceanus’ spouse was Tethys, the nurse, who had been thought to disperse his water to the earth via subterranean caves. He fathered the nymphs called Oceanids. These nymphs have the ta...

Happy Mother's Day: Rhea; Mother Goddess of Greece

Image
Rhea Great Mother Mother of the Gods Titan Queen of Heavens Titaness of Comfort, Blessing and Ease Titaness of Fertility, Motherhood and Generation Rhea is the daughter of Uranus (Father Heaven) and Gaia (Mother Earth). Her name means "flow" and "ease" relating to her role of the Great Mother where the flow refers to menstrual blood. It also links her to the tides and the moon. She is the Mother of the First Olympians:  Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon, Hera and Zeus. This earned her the title as “Mother of the Gods”. She is known to have been worshiped in different variations around the Mediterranean, and was closely associated with the Goddess Cybele (especially the Romans).  Kronos, Rhea's Titan brother and husband, castrated their father, Ouranos. After this, Kronos re-imprisoned the Hekatonkheires and the Cyclopes, and set the monster Kampê to guard them. He and Rhea took the throne as King and Queen of the Titans. This time was called...
