Today begins the Roman festival called Saturnalia to honored the Titan Lord Cronus.  The holiday of Saturnalia was celebrated between 17th December and 3rd January, a period of semi-lawlessness where dispensing of punishments suspended and courts closed, business stopped and all wars ceased. Cronus was the Titan of Agriculture. After he overthrew his father, he also became the God of the Universe. He was also the God of time. Cronus was the youngest of the original titans. He married Rhea. Cronus defeated his father Ouranos (Uranus), Ruler of the Universe when his mother Gaia, Mother Earth, asked all her children to overthrow him. She did this because Ouranos had hidden her previous children in Tartarus where there was no light. All Titans except Cronus opted not to try their might against Ouranos, but Cronus did. The Ancient Romans were no exception and Saturnalia was the most popular holiday of the Roman year. The joyous celebration, described by the ancient Roman poet, Catullus, as 'the best of days', was no quick affair but a succession of exuberant festivals lasting for over a week.
