In the beginning I

Happy New Year Everyone. I decide to start to do some Egyptian and Middle-Eastern mythologies to take a break from Greek-Roman mythology. I am starting with Atum
Atum, the creator of life
Atum (alternatively spelt Tem, Temu, Tum, and Atem) is an early deity in Egyptian mythology, his cult centered on the Ennead of Heliopolis. Originally associated with the earth, Atum gradually became considered to be the sun, as it passes the horizon. The separateness of the two instances per day that this occurs, lead to the aspect of Atum that was young, namely the rising sun, becoming considered a separate god, named Nefertum (literally meaning young Atum), and consequently Atum became mainly understood as the setting sun.
In the Ennead cosmogeny, he was considered to be the first god (The Creator), having arisen by his own force himself, sitting on a mound (benben), from the primordial waters (Nu). Early myths state that Atum created the god Shu and goddessTefnut from his semen by masturbation in th…

Happy Birthday Mithra

Image
Mithra is born on December 25th as an offspring of the Sun. Next to the gods Ormuzd and Ahrimanes, Mithra held the highest rank among the gods of ancient Persia. He is represented as a beautiful youth and a Mediator. Reverend J. W. Lake states: "Mithras is spiritual light contending with spiritual darkness, and through his labors the kingdom of darkness shall be lit with heaven's own light; the Eternal will receive all things back into his favor, the world will be redeemed to God. The impure are to be purified, and the evil made good, through the mediation of Mithras, the reconciler of Ormuzd and Ahriman. Mithras is the Good, his name is Love. In relation to the Eternal he is the source of grace, in relation to man he is the life-giver and mediator" (Plato, Philo, and Paul, p. 15).
He was considered a great traveling teacher and masters. He had twelve companions as Jesus had twelve disciples. Mithras also performed miracles.
Mithra was called "the good shepherd, "…

Welcome to the Golden Age

Image
Everyone loves a holiday. The Ancient Romans were no exception and Saturnalia was the most popular holiday of the Roman year. The joyous celebration, described by the ancient Roman poet, Catullus, as 'the best of days', was no quick affair but a succession of exuberant festivals lasting for over a week.
The holiday of Saturnalia was celebrated between 17th December and 3rd January, a period of semi-lawlessness where dispensing of punishments suspended and courts closed, business stopped and all wars ceased. In honor of Saturn, Titan God of the Harvest and Time. He is the Lord of the Titans and the Father of the Original Olympians. Saturn taught humans the art of agriculture and was dedicated to welcoming the germinating impulse of Nature. He had a mythical reign for a time, an Utopian era known as the Golden Age. Peace, happiness, and innocence abounded. All men were equal. But the Golden Age ended when Saturn was once again forced out by Jupiter. In his temple in Rome, the feet …

World Aid Day

Image
Today marks the 20th World AIDS Day. In these last 20 years, medical research has sparked marvelous breakthroughs in the treatment of HIV/AIDS around the world--even in developing countries where for many years since the outbreak of this once-deadly, now nearly chronic, disease treatment was inaccessible due to cost. Yet before we pat ourselves on the back too much for the successes we have made around the world in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, we must remember that many successes were hard-won and some have yet to come. In the US, our government (specifically the FDA) still supports a policy that prevents men who have sex with men from donating blood--a hangover from when HIV was perceived to be a "homosexual disease" that would contaminate the donated blood supply and when homosexuality was, and still is, considered a "high-risk" behavior leading to HIV infection. But the US is not alone in its position, , China even bans lesbians from donating blood due to their &quo…
